OTA and Booking Disputes

Expedia, Booking.com, or Kayak
won't refund you?

Online travel agencies profit from the gap between what travelers expect and what they receive. When OTAs deny legitimate refund requests, RecoverAir pursues every available recovery channel simultaneously.

How OTA booking disputes work

When you book through an online travel agency, you enter into two separate contractual relationships — one with the OTA as the booking intermediary, and one with the underlying property or airline. When something goes wrong, both parties often try to deflect responsibility to the other. RecoverAir addresses both simultaneously.

When OTA refunds are enforceable

Not every OTA dispute results in a full refund — but the following situations have strong recovery grounds regardless of the OTA's initial response.

Property materially different from listing

If the property did not match the photos, description, star rating, or amenity list presented on the booking page, the OTA has a consumer protection obligation to remedy the situation — regardless of the cancellation policy.

Booking not honored by the property

When a confirmed reservation is not honored by the property, the OTA bears responsibility for finding comparable alternative accommodation. If they fail to do so, or if the alternative is inferior, you have a claim against both the OTA and the property.

Prices higher than booked at checkout

Price discrepancies between what was shown at search and what was charged at checkout are among the most commonly reported OTA issues — and are often recoverable through a formal dispute.

The credit card chargeback option

If you paid through a credit card, a chargeback may be available in parallel with the OTA dispute. RecoverAir coordinates both channels — the OTA dispute and the credit card dispute — to maximize recovery speed and likelihood. Your credit card's travel protection benefits may also apply independently.

Frequently asked questions

Can I dispute a non-refundable OTA booking?
In some cases yes. Non-refundable policies are not absolute protection for the OTA against consumer protection claims. If the property was materially misrepresented, if the OTA made an error, or if circumstances beyond your control prevented travel, a dispute may succeed even on a non-refundable booking.
How long do I have to dispute an OTA booking?
OTA dispute windows vary by platform — most are 30–60 days from check-out. Credit card chargeback windows are typically 60–120 days from the transaction date. RecoverAir advises filing as soon as possible through all available channels.
Will disputing through my credit card hurt my OTA account?
In rare cases, OTAs flag accounts that submit chargebacks. However, when the chargeback is legitimate — property misrepresentation, booking not honored — this is a valid consumer protection mechanism and the risk of account restriction is limited.
